Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Intelligence have long been subjects of fascination and debate. While AI is taking the spotlight and trending in the news for how it will disrupt the world and replace humans, I wanted to explore some key areas of AI and also why our Natural Intelligence is here to stay for a while.
AI seeks to replicate human-like intelligence in machines. Currently with the use of OpenAI, ChatGPT and similar counterparts is taking the world by storm. It’s revolutionising the way tasks are performed and generating new possibilities, from virtual assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant and Alexa, to writing your articles, placing your photo in front of the Statue of Liberty, and diagnosing and analysing medical scans. Whilst the possibilities are endless, AI has a long way to go before it can truly level up to Natural Intelligence.
There are so many advantages of AI, but there are also limitations. AI systems excel at processing vast amounts of data, identifying patterns, and making predictions. They can tirelessly analyse information, perform complex calculations, and provide valuable insights. AI has already proven beneficial in various fields, such as healthcare, transportation, and education, augmenting human capabilities and revolutionising industries.
However, AI has its limitations. It operates within predefined boundaries and requires extensive training and specific datasets to perform effectively. Unlike humans, AI lacks the flexibility to adapt knowledge to new and unfamiliar situations.
Amid concerns about AI taking over the world, it's crucial to acknowledge that the development and deployment of AI systems are governed by human decisions and ethical considerations. Responsible AI development involves establishing robust frameworks, regulations, and safeguards to ensure its alignment with human values and objectives.
AI systems are tools created to assist us, rather than replace us. They are designed to augment our capabilities, streamline processes, and enhance productivity. Humans play a vital role in defining the objectives, values, and limitations of AI, ensuring that it serves as a tool for positive change. Natural Intelligence allows us to think critically, reason creatively, and approach problems from different perspectives, enabling innovation and adaptability.
Furthermore, AI lacks the fundamental qualities of human existence. Our ability to connect emotionally, build relationships, and exercise empathy distinguishes us from machines. Natural Intelligence encompasses our collective wisdom, cultural diversity, and shared experiences, enabling us to find meaning and purpose beyond the realms of AI.
Recently I was chatting with my nephew who is entering high school. As a school student, the concept of AI can be both exciting and intimidating. On one hand, AI presents endless possibilities for enhancing our lives, automating mundane tasks, and providing new avenues for innovation and “assisting” in schoolwork. On the other hand, there's a lingering concern that AI might overshadow our natural abilities and eventually take control.
When looking at the capabilities of AI, it's important for us all to recognise that Natural Intelligence is unparalleled in its depth and complexity. We, as humans, possess emotions, consciousness, and a deep understanding of the world that goes beyond mere data processing. Our ability to empathise, make moral judgments, and connect on an emotional level remains distinct from AI systems. AI and Natural Intelligence are distinct yet interconnected domains. While AI offers tremendous potential, Natural Intelligence remains an invaluable aspect of our humanity.
Students, professionals and people learning to adapt into a more technology world need an understanding and embracing the possibilities of AI. It can inspire us to explore new frontiers while recognising the unique qualities that make us human.
